ICD-Code I67.3: Progressive vascular leukoencephalopathy

The white matter in your brain has been damaged because it did not get enough blood for a long period of time.

The brain is made up of several parts. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. This is where thinking, feeling and planning of movements takes place. The cerebrum is made up of an outer layer called the cerebral cortex and an inner layer known as white matter.

The small blood vessels in the white matter of your brain are abnormally changed. Certain factors can damage the small blood vessels in the brain. These include, for example, high blood pressure, obesity and smoking. When fats and calcium are deposited in the vascular wall, the blood vessel can get narrower. This can sometimes prevent enough blood from flowing through it. At the same time, the wall of the blood vessels may also become thinner and more likely to tear. In this way, small bleeds can occur in the brain.

This condition can cause various problems. Memory may be affected. You may become confused or easily irritated. You may have problems moving or carrying out certain activities.
