ICD-Code D45: Polycythaemia vera

You have a disease of the bone marrow that causes too many blood cells to form.

The bone marrow is inside bone. The blood cells are formed in the bone marrow of some of the bones. There are 3 different types of blood cell: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells are important for carrying oxygen in the blood. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system. They fight pathogens. Platelets are important for clotting blood.Blood comprises both blood cells and a liquid component.

This disease causes too many blood cells in the blood. As a result, the blood is more viscous than normal. The tissues and organs may no longer be receiving an adequate blood supply. The blood may also clump together more quickly, meaning that blood clots form more easily. The blood clots can then block blood vessels. The disorder may also cause bleeding. Over time, the body may begin to produce fewer blood cells than normal.

There may be no symptoms at all in the early stages of the disease. The disease can cause various symptoms as it develops. For example, there may be facial redness and itching of the skin. Headaches, dizziness and fatigue may also occur. In addition, the spleen and liver may become enlarged. Blood clots may form in the legs or in organs such as the lungs, heart or brain, for example. This may cause pain or make you severely ill, for example.
