ICD-Code D90: Immune compromise due to radiation, chemotherapy or other immunosuppressive measures

Your immune system has been weakened by treatment.

The immune system protects the body from pathogens and foreign substances. The immune system can also destroy cells in the body that have pathologically changed. The body’s immune system is made up of different types of immune cells. Some immune cells can destroy pathogens or foreign bodies themselves. Other immune cells produce certain antibodies. Some of the immune system’s antibodies can make pathogens and foreign substances visible to the immune system. Other antibodies attack pathogens or foreign substances directly.

If the immune system is weakened, it may not produce enough antibodies. It is also possible that certain immune cells are no longer formed correctly.

When the immune system is weakened, the body finds it harder to fight against disease-causing microorganisms. So you become ill more easily. Then you can get fever, diarrhea or inflammations of the airways, for example. Illnesses may also take a more severe course.

The immune system may, for example, be weakened as a result of receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy to treat cancer. The immune system can sometimes also be weakened as a side effect of taking medication.
