ICD-Code I51.1: Rupture of chordae tendineae, not elsewhere classified
One or more chords in your heart valves are torn.
There are 4 valves in the heart. These valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction. So they have to close tightly. They also have to open up fully so that the blood can be properly pumped out of the heart. Two valves are attached to the inner wall of the heart by strong chords. One or more of these chords have torn in your case.
When the strong chords on a heart valves are torn, the valve in question may start to leak. As a result, some blood may flow back through the valve each time the heart beats. The heart may then have to work harder to pump enough blood into the body.
You may have various symptoms as a result. The symptoms depend, for example, on how much blood is flowing back through the leaky valve. You may be short of breath or have a racing heart. You may also feel weak or tired. If the heart can no longer pump enough blood, this can cause back-up. This can cause fluid to accumulate, for example in the legs or lungs.
