ICD-Code I86.1: Scrotal varices

You have varicose veins in your scrotum.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins. The scrotal veins carry blood from the testicles towards the heart. The testicles produce male sex hormones. An example of a male sex hormone is testosterone. The testicles are located outside the body, and are covered by skin. That is the scrotum. The veins run from the scrotum through the groin, before they end at the renal veins in the abdomen. The renal veins carry blood back towards the heart.

Varicose veins may form when blood backs up in the veins. This causes the veins to widen. The blood may back up if, for example, it is no longer able to drain normally.

Varicose veins on the scrotum do not necessarily cause symptoms. Varicose veins can cause the scrotum to enlarge or swell. This may produce a straining sensation or pain. In some cases, varicose veins on the scrotum can damage sperm.
