ICD-Code I86.4: Gastric varices

You have widened veins in your stomach.

The stomach is located in the upper abdomen. The stomach has a bag-like shape. It is connected to the gullet (oesophagus) at its upper end and to the first part of the small intestine at its lower end. Between the stomach and the small intestine there is a circular sphincter, the pylorus. The inside of the stomach is lined with mucous membrane.

Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart.Veins may also widen if the blood cannot drain normally and pools in the veins. Veins in the stomach may become widened if, for example, blood is unable to flow normally through the liver. Some of the blood then flows back towards the heart through other veins. Some of these veins are located below the stomach. The increased blood flow can cause the veins to widen.
