ICD-Code I87.20: Venous insufficiency (chronic)(peripheral) without ulceration

You have venous insufficiency in your leg.

The veins carry blood from the body towards the heart. Venous insufficiency means that the blood in the veins is not draining normally. This causes blood to back up in the veins.

Venous insufficiency can occur, for example, after blood clots have formed in the veins. Blood clots occur when various components of the blood clump together. Inflammations or other vein disorders can also cause venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency can also occur as a result of varicose veins or if the venous valves are not working properly. The veins have small venous valves. The venous valves prevent the blood from flowing in the wrong direction. In some people, these valves are not strong enough, or they do not develop properly. This condition is congenital, which means you were born with it.

Venous insufficiency can cause the leg to swell up. The skin may also change color or become inflamed.
