There has been a bleed in the child’s gastrointestinal area.
The gastrointestinal area can be divided into upper and lower areas. The upper part includes the oesophagus, the stomach and the first section of the small intestine. The lower part includes the rest of the small intestine plus the large intestine. The inside of the oesophagus, stomach and intestines is lined with mucous membrane. A mucous membrane is a moist skin.
If there is bleeding in the gastrointestinal area, bloody vomiting may occur. Blood in vomit may be red, brown or black. The stool may also be black, or blood may be visible in the stool.
