ICD-Code Q01.2: Occipital encephalocele
Tissue is protruding through an opening in the skull.
The brain is surrounded by a protective shell of bone, known as the skull or cranium. The upper, lateral and posterior part of the skull is called the calvaria or skullcap. The skullcap (calvaria) is made up of several bone plates. These bone plates are connected to one another by the cranial sutures.
If the bones of the skull are not connected with one another normally, a gap may form between the bones. Tissue may protrude out of this opening.
The defect is located at the back of the head. The brain tissue may be damaged due to its protrusion. This can impair intelligence. It may also cause seizures, impaired vision or problems with balance, for example. There may also be an increased accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull.
