ICD-Code Q04.0: Congenital malformations of corpus callosum

Parts of the brain have not formed correctly.

The brain is made up of several areas. For example, the cerebrum is used to think and plan actions. In the cerebellum, movements are initialized and coordinated. The brain stem is responsible for various unconscious tasks such as breathing. The brain stem passes into the spinal cord. The cerebrum consists of two halves known as hemispheres. Between the two cerebral hemispheres is a connection of nerve fibers which is called the corpus callosum.

In some cases, the corpus callosum does not develop or develops abnormally due to a congenital defect. The symptoms depend on whether there are any other brain defects present. If only the corpus callosum is affected, this may cause difficulties with tasks requiring the use of both hands, for example. It is difficult to coordinate the movements of the right hand with those of the left in this case. If other defects of the brain are also present, seizures may occur, for example. Mental and physical development may also be impaired in this case.

In rare cases, a corpus callosum that is not fully developed will produce no symptoms. In such cases, the defect may be detected by chance.
