ICD-Code Q27.1: Congenital renal artery stenosis
Congenital narrowing of one or both renal arteries
There are normally 2 kidneys in the body. They filter blood and create urine. They thus help to detoxify the body. Furthermore, the kidneys regulate blood pressure and the mineral levels in the blood, among other things. Each kidney has one renal artery. The renal arteries supply the kidneys with oxygen-rich blood.
While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue.
One or both renal arteries have not developed properly and are therefore narrower than normal. If the renal arteries are narrowed, the kidneys do not receive an adequate supply of blood. When the kidneys receive too little blood, they release hormones. These messengers cause the blood pressure to rise throughout the body. The purpose is to increase blood supply to the kidneys.
If blood pressure is increased due to narrowing of the renal arteries, blood vessels and organs can become damaged over time. If the kidneys are damaged by high blood pressure, they may no longer be able to function normally.
