ICD-Code Q27.3: Peripheral arteriovenous malformation

You have a congenital defect affecting the connections between your arteries and veins.

Arteries are blood vessels that transport blood away from the heart. They supply all the tissue in the body with oxygen-rich blood.Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart.Inside the organs and tissues, arteries branch off into tiny blood vessels (capillaries). These small blood vessels have a thin, transparent wall. Oxygen and nutrients, for example, can pass from the blood into the tissue through this wall. The oxygen-poor blood then flows back towards the heart through blood vessels that increase in size. The tiny blood vessels thus form a connection between arteries and veins.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

Blood vessel defects may, for example, cause a widening of the capillaries between arteries and veins. There may also be a direct connection between arteries and veins. This means that the blood flow directly from arteries into veins. As a result, the affected blood vessels may become enlarged.

Additional indicator

On medical documents, the ICD code is often appended by letters that indicate the diagnostic certainty or the affected side of the body.
