ICD-Code Q44.0: Agenesis, aplasia and hypoplasia of gallbladder
Your gallbladder has not developed properly.
The gallbladder is in the top right part of the abdomen below the liver. The liver produces bile. The bile flows through bile ducts to the gallbladder and is stored there. When needed, the bile flows through another bile duct to the intestine. There, the bile helps to digest fats.
While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue.
A defect may result in the gallbladder being entirely absent or smaller than normal. Various symptoms may occur as a result. For example, you may have pain in your upper right abdomen. You may also have nausea and vomiting. These symptoms may possibly occur after eating fatty foods. The skin may also take on a yellowish color. You may also have no symptoms at all.
