ICD-Code Q44.4: Choledochal cyst

You were born with bile ducts that are wider than normal.

Bile is produced in the liver. The bile is transported via bile ducts within the liver towards the gallbladder. The bile is collected in the gallbladder. When you eat something, bile is released into the intestine. This is what the common bile duct to the intestine is for.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If bile ducts do not develop properly, they may be wider than normal.

One or more bile ducts may be affected. If bile ducts are widened, this may cause abdominal pain. The skin may also take on a yellowish color. Nausea and vomiting are possible symptoms. Sometimes, a hardened lump can be felt in the upper right abdomen.
