ICD-Code Q75.1: Craniofacial dysostosis
A congenital disorder that includes early ossification of cranial sutures.
The disorder is hereditary. Other family members can also be affected.
The upper, lateral and posterior part of the skull is called the calvaria or skullcap. The skullcap (calvaria) is made up of several bone plates. These bone plates are connected to one another by the cranial sutures.Mobile sutures allow the child’s head to grow. Once the skull has stopped growing, the cranial sutures ossify (turn to bone) and fuse together.
If individual cranial sutures ossify too early, the growth of the skull is not symmetrical. This may change the shape of the skull. The skull may appear higher or longer than normal. If several cranial sutures ossify too early, health problems may also arise. Skull growth may be restricted so that the head is smaller than normal. As a result, the brain may not have enough space inside the skull. Pressure on the brain may increase. This may cause nausea and vomiting, for example.
This disorder may also involve facial bone differences. The ears may not have developed properly, leading to hearing problems. The eyes may, for example, protrude more or be set further apart than in most other people. The upper jaw may also be smaller than usual. As a result, the lower jaw may appear to protrude.
