ICD-Code Q76.1: Klippel-Feil syndrome

You have a congenital defect in which several vertebrae in your cervical spine have fused together.

The spine consists of several sections. The cervical spine begins below the head. The cervical spine is very mobile. The spine is made up of the individual vertebrae. Between every 2 vertebrae there is a vertebral disc.Adjacent vertebrae in the spine are normally connected by joints and ligaments.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

In your case, several of the vertebrae in your cervical spine did not develop properly and, as a result, are fused together. This means that your cervical spine is not as mobile as normal. This may make it difficult to move your head and neck. The neck may also be shortened or curved. Fused vertebrae can also cause pain in the back of the neck.

The vertebrae have fused together due to a change in genetic information. Changes to the genetic information can be inherited within the family. Other family members may therefore also be affected.
