ICD-Code Q79.2: Exomphalos

There is an opening in the abdominal wall, through which organs from the abdominal cavity have protruded outside the body.

The abdominal wall is formed primarily by the abdominal muscles. It surrounds the organs of the abdomen and pelvis.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

In this case, the abdominal wall has not developed properly. As a result, there is an opening in the abdominal wall close to the navel. Organs from inside the abdominal cavity have protruded outside of the body through the umbilical cord. This affects some parts of the intestines, for example. Having abdominal organs outside the body can cause severe illness. When abdominal organs are outside the body, they are more susceptible to pathogens and may become inflamed. In addition, the blood supply to the abdominal organs may be restricted and they may die.
