ICD-Code Q79.4: Prune belly syndrome
Congenital defect of the urinary tract and the abdominal wall
The urinary passages include the ureters, bladder and urethra. Urine flows from both kidneys into the bladder via the ureters. The urethra channels the urine outward from the bladder. The abdominal wall is formed primarily by the abdominal muscles. It surrounds the organs of the abdomen and pelvis.
While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.
In this case, the urinary tract and abdominal wall have not developed properly. The diameter of the ureters, bladder and urethra may be wider than normal as a result. Your kidneys may not work properly. The urinary tract may be susceptible to pathogens and inflammation. The abdominal muscles may be less developed than normal or may be entirely absent. As a result, the abdominal wall may be thin and flaccid. Other organs, such as the lungs or intestine, may also have failed to develop properly.
