Dabei können sich Krankheits-Erreger oder ihre Giftstoffe über das Blut im gesamten Körper verteilen. Wenn das Abwehrsystem des Körpers darauf nicht richtig reagiert, dann können Organe und Gewebe geschädigt werden. Die Schäden können sehr schwer sein. Es kann sein, dass sie sich nicht begrenzen lassen.
Bei einer Blutvergiftung ist man sehr krank. Möglicherweise ist man verwirrt und schläfrig. Man kann Fieber und einen sehr schnellen Herzschlag haben. Auch die Atmung kann schneller sein als normalerweise. Eine Blutvergiftung kann Auswirkungen auf viele Organe im Körper haben. So kann es zum Beispiel sein, dass die Nieren nicht mehr ausreichend Urin bilden können.
