Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart.The veins contain valves called venous valves. The venous valves ensure that the blood can only flow in the direction of the heart. Various health conditions cause a widening (dilation) of the veins, so that the venous valves no longer close properly. The blood in the veins can then back up.
You have had treatment to improve the closing of venous valves. For this type of treatment, an incision is first made in the skin. The affected vein is exposed. The vein is then wrapped in a thin sleeve made of synthetic material. This serves to reduce the diameter of the dilated vein. You have had treatment for a vein in the hollow of your knee.
