The growth of the thighbone was temporarily slowed down by surgery.
The femur has an upper, middle and lower section.The lower section of the femur is connected to the lower leg bones by the knee joint.
The operation was performed on the growth plate at the lower section of the thighbone.In children and adolescents the bone’s growth stems from the growth plates. There are growth plates in the long bones in the arms and legs, and the long bones in the hands and feet. There is a growth plate at each end of these bones.
During the surgery, a specialized device is typically inserted near the growth plate. These specialized devices can be screws or plates, for example. This makes it possible to slow down the further growth of the thighbone for a certain period of time. The device used can be removed later on. The thighbone can then continue to grow.
