Special surgical techniques and operations in special care situations: Preoperative tissue marking: With wire
During an operation, your tissue was marked with a wire.
During surgery, a wire can be used to mark tissue that is to be removed. This allows this tissue to be located more easily during the operation.
The wire is placed in the tissue before the operation. To do so, a hollow needle is first pushed through the skin. The needle is advanced to the tissue that is to be removed. The wire can be inserted into the tissue through the hollow needle. The needle is then pulled back out. The wire remains in the body until the operation.
During this time, images of the inside of the body are usually taken. These show clearly whether the needle and the wire are in the right place.

If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.

- B: Both sides
