The metacarpus forms the palm of the hand and the back of the hand. It consists of the longish metacarpal bones. There is one metacarpal bone for each finger.The thumb consists of 2 finger bones. The other fingers consist of 3 finger bones.The individual phalanges of the hand are connected to each other via a joint.Joints are encased in a joint capsule.The joint capsule contains synovial fluid. This enables the bones to slide easily past one another.
The needle can be used, for example, to drain excess synovial fluid, pus or blood from the joint.
