There are 2 bones in the lower leg, the tibia and the fibula. The tibia is on the inside of the leg. The fibula is on the outside of the leg. Both bones in the lower leg have an upper, middle and lower section.Just below the knee joint, the tibia and fibula are connected by a joint.
Joints are encased in a joint capsule.The joint capsule contains synovial fluid. This enables the bones to slide easily past one another.The needle can be used, for example, to drain excess synovial fluid, pus, or blood from the joint.
