The intention is for the radiation to damage pathologically altered cells in the body.Radioactive drugs are used for tumors, among other things.The tissue in the body is made up of cells. A tumor disorder involves the cells multiplying more than normal. This results in abnormal or excess tissue forming. A tumor can be benign or malignant.
The cells of the body have typical proteins on their surfaces that differ depending on the type, role and origin of the cell. There is, for example, a protein that is only found on prostate cells. This protein is called PSMA. This protein exists in greatly increased quantities on tumor cells of the prostate compared with healthy prostate cells.
You were given a radioactive drug via a blood vessel. The drug spreads through the body via the blood. It detects a protein on the surface of tumor cells in the prostate and binds to it. The radioactive drug accumulates in this area of the prostate and emits radiation.
