ICD-Code Q00.1: Craniorachischisis

A severe congenital defect in which the brain and spinal cord remain open.

The brain is surrounded by a protective shell of bone, known as the skull or cranium. The spinal cord is located in the spinal column. The spinal cord is made up of nerve fibers. The brain uses the nerve fibers to exchange information with the organs, skin and muscles.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

With this defect, the skull and spine do not develop normally. As a result, they are not completely closed as normal. In addition, the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord may not have formed properly. As a result, the brain and spinal cord are open and exposed at the affected sites and may be damaged. The brain may also be partially or entirely absent.

The causes of this defect are not yet fully understood. Changes in genetic information may be a causal factor. In addition, a deficiency in certain vitamins or minerals during development in the womb can also lead to this type of defect.

The defect can be of varying degrees of severity. You may no longer be able to move your arms or legs normally, for example. You may not be able to urinate or defecate properly either. If the defect is very severe, it may be incompatible with life.
