ICD-Code Q75.4: Mandibulofacial dysostosis
A congenital disorder involving various defects in the head region.
This disorder may affect various bones in the region of the head, for example. These include, for example, the jaw bones and the cheek bones.
The jaw consists of the upper jaw and lower jaw. The upper jaw bone is located above the mouth and forms the roof of the oral cavity. The lower jaw bone is located below and to the side of the mouth. In the center of the lower jaw is the chin. To the side, the lower jaw bone extends to below the ears. The mandibular joint is located there.
Cheek bones (zygomatic bones) are the bones that form the cheek area. Cheek bones also form the lateral outer wall of the eye sockets. There is one cheek bone on each side of the face.
While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.
If the jaw bones and cheek bones do not develop correctly, they may be smaller than normal. This can alter the appearance of the face. They may also cause problems with opening the mouth. The ears may also be smaller than in other people. It is also possible for the ears to be completely unformed. The auditory canals may also be closed. If the ears do not develop properly, this may cause problems with hearing. The outer corners of the eyes may be markedly slanted downwards. Gaps may possibly develop in the lower eyelids.
The disease is hereditary. Other family members may also be affected.
